“Impact of Transit on Economic Development”

The major transportation agencies in Missouri are adopting and implementing policies to encourage economic development projects that fund and expand adjoining transportation facilities. These initiatives require partnerships with the private sector and the cooperation of related political subdivisions. Missouri provides some specific incentives for such projects and the panel will examine the strengths, pitfalls, accomplishments, and future of these policies and procedures.

This panel of experienced economic development practitioners will share best practices from communities throughout the state on creative deal structuring that doesn’t involve capturing that elusive increment.

A panel of three economic development professionals from rural communities will share common issues and challenges and describe the impacts and consequences affecting their local economy. For each issue, they will provide MEDFA attendees a road map of how their organizations are taking action to mitigate the impacts and address the consequences.

As a bonus, each will share unique opportunities they have found in rural Missouri and offer the audience the action steps they are taking to capture those and illuminate the great parts of living and working “outstate”. Join us and take home some great ideas for your community!

2021 RICHARD KING AWARD WINNER

Congratulations to Mary Lilly Smith, Former Planning & Development Director for the City of Springfield, Missouri!

2021 Richard King MEDFA Award winner- Mary Lilly Smith, City of Springfield, MO

“Most would agree that Downtown Springfield would not be what it is today without the influence of Mary Lilly Smith,” said Mayor Ken McClure in a news release. “Her leadership and results-oriented thinking helped make Springfield better and her big picture perspective has left an indelible mark on our community that will benefit generations to come.

Mary Smith served the City of Springfield Missouri for 38 years before retiring in 2021. City officials credit Smith with having a hand in around 100 key economic development projects and business attraction, retention, and expansion initiatives, as well as two long-range city planning efforts in “Vision 2020” and “Forward SGF.”

She developed a format and process for the city’s first Capital Improvement Plan and also drafted the Landmarks Ordinance, which outlined the process for protecting architecturally significant properties. Congratulations on winning MEDFA’s 2021 Richard King Award, Mary!
